Cera Speaks

Hi everyone,
Its been a while since I spoke to you about being a young pup in the big city. We recently moved house I think my people told you.

The people realized that they too like lying in the grass and sniffing for snails.

Thats the new dining room the owners are so crazy about... My new friend Harry tried to get on the table but he's only 6mths old so I forgave him.

Thats the new couch and my new view. From the street its good because you can only see my ears.
Our new house is fantastic because I got a new couch to lay on. I think my people got it for free from some where down the street. Thats one of the holes I dug. Not a bad size. I put a delicious bone in there. They put it on the front sun room place and I sit there and make sure all the other cats and dogs in the street are behaving themselves. There is one dog who I think is great but there is another very annoying Pomeranian who goes out without his people and just wees everywhere. Not so nice really. My favourite cat is this shy one.My least favourite is this black and white one with a bell that goes in ceiling. I think there is also a creature in there. And the silly magpies are always spying on me.

My people get disappointed in me when I dig holes so they have given me extra treats and toys to distract me. I try not to dig but sometimes the urge is too strong. They also put this blue thing with water in it in my yard. Im not sure what im supposed to do with it but sometimes my girl (the one that smells the best) plays with me there. She thinks I think I can catch the water spray but I just do it because it makes her laugh.

There is also a new park that I go to chase the ball. I walk my people there pretty much everyday. It's right near my doctors and on the way we go past this strange place that has frozen people in the front yard. I stop and check them out every time, need to know if they've moved.

Anyway got to go, I think I heard my least favourite cat out the front. Oh yeah I still like swimming, Im pretty much the best dog at the park now.

Grrrr... Woof!

Summer!

I'm coming up to my second summer in Sydney and I have a feeling that this one is going to be really different to the last. Mostly because I am more of a local now ;-)

Also we live in a house with a yard which facilitates BBQs and fun times especially now that daylight savings has started and we have these delicious long twilight hours.

Thats Cera and her dopey friend. That dog with the patch is the slowest and friendliest dog I have ever met! I think it is part sloth.

That is the hallway in our house that reminds me of homes in QLD. It helps me feel more settled in Sydney. The last picture is of the Study corner. Summer will be great because we won't have so much study. More time for fun and for creative things.

And I'm going to do some of the things I have been putting off till I have holidays, like going to Luna Park and hopefully the zoo & maybe some urban exploring to work on some photo taking.

Our new house is much quieter than our old house except for when planes go over. It seems that most of Sydney is in a flight path though.

So here's to summer and friends and adventures and taking big breaths of warm air that keep you going through the rest of the year.
Here's to Sydney.

Everyday

Everyday, I feel myself becoming more and more attached to Sydney. I'm putting down roots and they're taking hold. One thing I really love about Sydney is the way that even after more than six months of living here and becoming quite used to things you can discover a whole new aspect of the city. The other day by chance I had a dental appointment in Balmain. I have been to Balmain before but not right into the suburb - just the tip.

I realised while I was sitting on the bus going down Darling street that I was being visited by a familiar but unexpected feeling.
That feeling was the awe, excitement and curiosity that I tend to feel when I'm traveling (usually overseas). I'm not quite sure exactly what about Balmain it was that brought this on. But I liked it. Maybe it was the wide open streets, the old houses (but different; bigger more character than the other parts of syd), the mixture of interesting restaurants, boutiques, bookshops, grocers and family's, as well as the coastal feel. Balmain is a sort of peninsula that pokes into Sydney harbour.

The main street is hilly and random just like a coastal road that winds its way down to the sea. And the people were interesting too; a Mercedes parked next to someones shopping trolley house.
I was so excited about finding this little pocket of Sydney I called Marty and said "I know where we should move next!". Now I just need a break from uni and other business to begin the culinary exploration! Most of all I'm so happy to have had a half-day holiday in my own city! Funny how travel can happen to you when you least expect it. Usually its all about packing a suitcase and saving dollars - which I do love. But now I'm curious as to what other adventures lie a bus ride away!

The first photo is a picture of me in New York but that's kind of how I felt in balmain.
The other photo is of Cera the Dog watching the movie Underdog.

From the desk of Cera the Dog:
I didn't get to go to Balmain because unlike puny human my teeth stay healthy without much help.

I did recently discover a new spot in the canal where I can sneak under the fence to chase the pidgeons and ibis and to have a bath in the creek. Its not that good but I don't mind it just after the rain. I do like the way it makes my humans wave and yell my name though.

recently I met a cute baby dog, it was fun rolling in the dust with her. It made me realise I'm pretty grown up now and as a result I have decided to increase the percentage of the day spent sleeping to about 60%.

Well woof woof I'm off for a walk!

Things I Have Learnt

I have learnt how to cook for one – Not a skill I wanted to learn… but one I’m proud of none the less. Its best to under shop and go more frequently the you waste less. I find it impossible to cook just one serve for dinner so I am now the master of the slow cooker casserole and any other meal which can be reheated.

I have learnt how to cook having only one good quality fry pan and one large saucepan and no microwave.

I have learnt how to carry everything from the car up to the apartment in pretty much one go.

I have learnt that organic fruit & vegetables delivered to your door costs that same as buying non-organic F&V.

I have learnt that the parks and water fronts in and around Sydney are so pretty!

I have learnt how to fight for a car space in the only ikea in Sydney.

I have learnt how to get across the harbour bridge in the correct lane without exiting too early.

I have learnt how to drive from Sydney to Brisbane and where all the best places for breaks are.

I have learnt that if you do the above drive more than three times in a year it gets boring, fast.

I have learnt that lots of people in Bondi who are stylish and trendy all look the same.

I have learnt that the suburb of Leichardt really is little Italy, there is even a bilingual school on Norton Street.

I have learnt that I live in a high risk area for theft and not to leave anything valuable in the car.

I have learnt that Sydney’s laws for dogs in parks are way better than Brisbanes.

I have learnt that it is better to have a medium or large dog in an apartment rather than a small one. Medium dogs are they best they don’t bark and they get you out of the house twice a day or more.

I have learnt that Marty and I are really lucky when it comes to Landlords, she lets us have a dog

I have learnt that Marty & I are really lucky in where we have landed, walking distance to Glebe, Annandale, Newtown, Sydney Uni, Gym, Physio etc

I have learnt that the inner-west is more chilled than the eastern suburbs.

I have learnt how to unclog the loo and that you cant put paper towel in there.

I have learnt how to make the fridge work better.

I have learnt that Sydney drivers tailgate way more than Brisbane drivers but that Sydney drivers are better at keeping in the left lane.

I have learnt that there are great op-shops in Sydney!

I have learnt how to drive to Jenny & Phil’s house in Blaxland.

I have learnt that I hate living by myself but that I can do it.

I have learnt that dogs are the BEST at keeping secrets.

I have learnt that I love Sydney and I can’t wait for Marty to come home and share it with me.

I have learnt that I love and miss my Brisbane friends and family.

In our house there is Me (Daria), Marty and Cera the Dog. There are also our things etc. When we first moved started looking for somewhere to live in Sydney we were quite worried it would be difficult to find a place that was near Sydney uni and that would allow pets. After not much luck through agents (on paper Marty and I don’t appear to be ideal tenants, in person we’re pretty good) we decided to search out rental properties directly from the owner. This proved to be much more successful and we quickly found this nice apartment on Gumtree.

So we have a dog in an apartment. This is my most common question: how’s Cera does she like it? Well interestingly being a dog she doesn’t seem to mind where she is as long as it’s near her people, she has food and water, lots of walks and heaps of toys. So check, check, check and check. What we didn’t realise when we looked at the map and saw how close our new home is to parks is how great those parks are!

So, Cera the Dog, and I walk everyday along a number of different routes. Our favourite is off-leash most of the way and culminates in a friendly dog beach in Sydney Harbour.
Now that I am more dependent on public space to exercise my dog than I was in Brisbane I have become considerably more interested in the laws that govern these spaces. A pleasant surprise on moving to Sydney is the discovery that the laws surrounding pets and their freedoms are much more inclusive and comprehensive than in Brisbane.

In Brisbane you cannot have your dog off its lead anywhere except inside designated off-leash areas that are delineated by tall black fences. This is an odd scenario for a dog. Dogs are social and yet loyal creatures so a dog park is actually quite challenging for them, they get to socialise but don’t have the usual limitations of being under their owner strict command in order to be secure. If you have ever visited the Brisbane dog parks after 4pm you will see heaps (more that 30) of dogs going pretty wild playing, chewing, chasing and being crazy. Its fun to watch and good for the dogs health but not a very natural environment.

In Sydney I have yet to come across a single fenced area to contain dogs. Rather whole parks or sections of parks are designated people and dog areas. All who venture into these parts of the parks know they are likely to come into contact with dogs and dog owners are expected to have reasonable control of their dogs, supervise them and pick up their poop (there are also loads of free dog poop bags which are degradable and pretty good for the environment). This is a much more natural environment for owner and pet. The dog can wander ahead at their own pace, sniff the news, greet fellow canines and roll around at leisure. Dogs that are walking off-leash tend to do a circling back behavior where they go ahead but come back or wait for you to catch-up. They (if trained) remain alert and responsive to your commands and are generally more civilized then when in the penned free for all of an off-leash area.

The city rangers who are in charge of making sure the rules are followed are all really approachable and seem to like dogs!! They’re happy to give you a chance before you are fined and are very helpful with local knowledge. This is in accordance with the Companion Animal Act some pretty cool legislation that has been created with the knowledge that people will have pets, they love their pets and they want to have fun in the community with their pets! Search the Bris City Council site for something similar and I doubt you’ll find it! You pay a one-off fee and your companion is registered for life. So we didn’t know it but living in an apartment in Sydney is turning out to be more fun for us and for, Cera the Dog. We take a more proactive role in her exercise and play, rather than just letting her roam the garden.

Oh yeah and as a side note the laws governing small pets (birds, rabbits etc) are laws for Pocket Pets!

p.s I know your all wondering… how do I manage to take Cera out to pee all the time? Well I like to take her out often, we usually walk twice a day and maybe more little trips. Marty found this nifty invention that goes on your balcony: The Portable Dog Potty. It is some treated fake grass on top of a specially designed tray. The dogs go woo! A loo! And pee there.. Its not perfect but its pretty good, the equivalent of kitty litter.

Prelude

Hello,

Let me just start by saying that I'm not promising much with this blog. I am prone to starting this sort of thing and then just letting it drift... In fact I think I already have a blog floating somewhere in cyberspace. But what the heck you’re not really down with it unless you blog and I really do miss everyone in (QLD) and everywhere else, and I am really bad at keeping in touch. So let this me a journal, letter, essay or narrative where I will share my experiences and thoughts on being newly transplanted in Sydney,NSW.

Obviously some of the things that are important/interesting to me will be boring/irrelevant to you. So if there is something more important/interesting/relevant for me to write about don't hesitate to suggest the topic. So here goes...

p.s. yes there are swans in Sydney... maybe that's why the football team is the 'Sydney swans'... the swan that I met wasn't that friendly but I count him as a new friend in Sydney anyway...

p.p.s the other picture is from a daily walk with, Cera the dog, to the end of Sydney Harbour in Federal Park. About 20-30min from our apartment, off-leash about 80% of the way.
